Mike's Update - February 25, 2013

Good evening all:

Whoever said lacrosse players were tougher than baseball players could not be more wrong   (you know who I mean). I'm sitting here with my hero during my quiet late night vigil which we both get benefit from and wanted to give a little update on the days events.
The long and short of it was that we expected a somewhat uneventful day.  Donna and I were here early in anticipation of being with Greg until he went down for his scheduled angiogram.  Greg did not go for his scan unit early afternoon and had become quite agitated due to active vasolspasm which we knew were coming.  By early evening,  when we finally got to see him, he was brought back to ICU and is now on a ventilator. Although we knew it was possible, it was not easy for Jill to walk in and see her guy in that state. We know it is best for now, the reasons for which are many, complicated, and way beyond any attempt I could make of an explanation. If I tried, my kids would accuse me of pretending to be Dr. house.  In fact, I tell them I am more like Dr. McDreamy.

The vasolspasm activity was really playing havoc and this will allow Greg to be far more comfortable, safer, and better prepared for the scans and angiograms over the next several days.  These spasms have yet to peak and will get worse over the next few days.

Today we had limited visitors, which at this time is the preference.  Natalie's friend Chris Got, who is a fellowship surgeon here in Boston, spent a bit of time with us as we waited to see Greg.  His presence, kindness and sense of humor brings nice calmness to our family and is greatly appreciated.  Jill's friends Jess and Emily both work at the Brigham and stop by regularly to give Jill and the rest of us hugs.  After spending most of the week on a diet of Au Bon Pain, it was a nice teat to sit in the family conference room and enjoy pizza from Regina's thanks to Mike Leone from KVC.  Just seeing a familiar face was nice and for him to fight he traffic cross town was really appreciated. I knew there were some classy guys in that group.  It is so comforting to know that not only have John and Ann been here, but also providing some normalcy or Jake and Gavin, and loving arms for Jill to come home to after these frightening days.  John has decided to bring Greg one sleeve of ProV1's everyday until he gets out of here.  As I see it that potentially well over a hundred balls.  With Greg's slice that should get him through 4-5 rounds.

It is amazing as a parent to watch your kids, Jill, Jehan, Natalie, Sean, and Jason rally for one another the way they have.  Not only caring for their own families, being here for Greg when they can, taking care of each other, making sure Donna and I are ok, and even providing lodging for Fenway who had been terrorizing anyone that tried to let her out.  Lastly my D, who has been my rock during this whole thing.  Remaining solid as ever, understanding my needs and emotions, all while watching her"favorite son" go through hell.  I could not be prouder of any family!!

Jill has begun putting together a blog, which with some luck, will be functional by tomorrow. It will give us a place to post photos, updates, and messages without cumbersome emails.  Will let you know how that goes.

Greg is resting nicely, and will be heading for another CT scan at 4:30 am.  I think I will wander down to the hotel so I can be here in the morning to meet he Docs.

Thanks for your continued support, prayers and outpouring of love!!

Encouraged,
Mike
